Dev clawed at the door handle with his left hand while grasping the hammer in his right. Celeste grabbed his arm before he pulled the door open.
“Don’t do it!” She said, “You told me to stop you if it came to this.”
“It’s no good!” Dev snarled, “I need a hit!”
“No, you don’t,” Celeste said, grabbing Dev’s arm tighter, “it’s not worth it!”
Dev looked Celeste square in the eyes, hers watery in contrast to his, dry and bloodshot. “I need this. You know I do. Behind this door is my salvation. And if I have to go making a mess with this hammer, then so be it.”
“Put the hammer down, Dev! Someone’s going to get hurt!”
“It’s a chance I’m willing to take.”
He turned away, ashamed about what he was about to do. Celeste pleaded her case. He’d been so strong. Two weeks and no slip ups. He was over the worst of it and she thought the cravings had subsided. But here he was, desperation seeping from his pores. A man on a mission. A desire for a hit so strong, he was willing to use force to get it.
He flung open the door. A gust of chilled air hit him in the face as he peeked inside. He immediately saw it there looking back at him, goading him on.
With the hammer still clenched in one hand he grabbed it with the other and threw it onto a nearby worktop. He brought the hammer down, once, twice, three times.
“I think that’ll do, Dev.” Celeste said. “I think you’ve made your point.”
Dev released the hammer and began tearing into the packet, hooking out the chocolate shards and dropping them into his mouth, his saliva softening its solid outer and releasing its luxurious taste to his eagerly awaiting tastebuds.
He closed the fridge door, balled up the wrapper and dropped it into the bin. He gave Celeste a warm, satisfied smile.
“You were doing so well!” she said, “Are you done now?”
“Oh, yes. Until next time.” he said, “And can you please stop putting the chocolate in the fridge?”
