Done, Not Perfect

This short story was written in response to Fandangoโ€™s One Word Challenge.ย

Todayโ€™s word is: Adornedโ€ฆ

Doreen looked at the stack of framed photographs and the dusty โ€˜newโ€™ shelf propped up against the wall.

โ€œWhen are you going to put up this shelf so I can display these photos, Derek?โ€ she asked.

โ€œWhen Iโ€™m ready, Love.โ€ he said, scrolling the TV guide for his next watch.

Doreen picked up one of the photos. She pulled her sleeve over her hand and gave the picture a dust while looking at the image of their daughter and their daughterโ€™s new husband, putting on their rings and gazing lovingly into each otherโ€™s eyes.

โ€œAnd this one,โ€ she said, picking up another and giving it the same treatment, โ€œWeโ€™re in this one.โ€

Derek managed to pull his eyes away from the TV for a moment to look over at the picture Doreen was holding.

โ€œVery nice,โ€ he said, โ€œBut we can always look in the mirror if we want to see ourselves.โ€

โ€œNot the same, Derek. And anyway, look how smart we were that day.โ€ Doreen said, โ€œCโ€™mon. Why not just do this one job? Done, not perfect.โ€

Derek released a long and laboured sigh. Doreen wondered if perhaps she hadnโ€™t actually asked that he put up a shelf, and that sheโ€™d in fact asked that he carve her face into Mount Rushmore alongside Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt and Jefferson.

โ€œCโ€™mon, Derek.โ€ she persisted, โ€œDone, not perfect.โ€

โ€œAlright, Love. Iโ€™ll take a look.โ€

Doreen gave Derek a thank you and left the room without further comment. She didnโ€™t want to risk dissuading him. She considered pocketing the TV remote and taking it with her, but thought that ill advised.

She returned a couple of hours later. As she entered, she caught Derek standing back and admiring the shelf which was no longer resting up against the wall, but screwed into it. The shelf had even been adorned with the framed photographs.

Doreen couldnโ€™t help but smile.

Until she stood next to Derek to share his perspectiveโ€ฆ

First of all, it wasnโ€™t centered. The wall had extra holes below the shelf in weird places. A couple of the holes had raw plugs half hanging out of them. It even looked like he had somehow, and inexplicably, sawn off part of one end of the shelf too.

To top things off, the shelf was clearly on the wonk. It was so far out, she wondered if Derek had done the job with one foot in a flat slipper and the other in a stiletto.

โ€œThere you go, Love.โ€ he said, beaming, โ€œDone, not perfect.โ€

Doreen put her hands on her hips and nodded her head.

โ€œNo truer words have ever been said.โ€ she acknowledged, โ€œMaybe next time letโ€™s go for โ€˜done AND perfectโ€™.โ€

That sounded like conversations my wife have had about me hanging the framed family photos in the hallway around our bedrooms. I told her that I would hang them as soon as I found the right tool. She asked me what tool I was looking for. โ€œOh, I said, “it’s called โ€˜a round tooit.โ€™โ€

Brilliant! I’m sure I have one of those somewhere. It’s funny, my wife happened to peek over my shoulder and saw the last few lines of the story and said “Hey! That’s what I say!”

Reminds me of an advert in NZ where the gardener was called Derek and the aging mum told her son she was giving her entire fortune to Derek. The look on his face was priceless and Derek gave a sweet smile while his bicep rippled cheekily. The random stuff I remember…was like 20 years ago lol

But back to your story, a great take on the home DIYer and the persistant wife…

That sounds so funny! I’ll have to see if I can find it. Perhaps YouTube will be able to rustle it up for me.

Im sure youll find it on YouTube. I’ll glhave a look to, if I find it, ill send you the link. I thought of another cute vintage NZ advert yesterday. The bluebird chips one. A cartoon little penguin shivering on the ice…’bbbluebird’s the word’. That was so long ago! It was really catchy!
